Remembering our good friend, Geoffrey Cyr
In November of 2024, Amesbury dedicated a memorial to Geoffrey Cyr, a beloved member of the Department of Public Works (DPW) who passed away on the job a little under two years ago. Known for his tireless dedication, exceptional creativity, and deep love for his familiy, Geoff made an indelible impact on Amesbury through the maintenance and improvement of municipal buildings and public spaces.
The memorial, located at the Town Park ballfields which he helped build, will serve as a lasting tribute to Geoff's invaluable contributions to the city and his unwavering commitment to the upkeep and safety of the community’s infrastructure. His legacy as a resourceful problem-solver and an innovator within the DPW will continue to inspire his former co-workers and residents alike.
Geoff was known throughout the DPW for his unique approach to problem-solving, often developing innovative solutions to complex challenges in the maintenance of public buildings and facilities. Whether it was repurposing materials to save costs, designing creative upgrades for aging infrastructure, or troubleshooting last-minute repairs with limited resources, Geoff approached every task with resourcefulness and boundless ingenuity.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Geoff was deeply loved by his colleagues, who considered him not only a mentor but also a true friend. His kindness, generosity, and sense of humor made him a cherished part of the DPW team and the broader community. Outside of his work, he was a devoted father and loved getting away with his family to the White Mountains.
"He had an incredible ability to make the impossible seem possible," said Rob Desmarais, a longtime co-worker and friend. "No matter how tough a job was, he always found a way, and he did it with a smile. He had a way of making everyone around him better, and we’re all better for having known him."
The family invites everyone to come by the fields and pause for a moment by the memorial bench, and think of Geoff. Positioned along the third base line, Geoff would have loved the location.
